Against Trident Renewal

This CLP Notes

That the overall cost of replacing and maintaining Britain's nuclear weapons system will be £167 billion based on current government projections.

Believes

1.   That the supposed deterrent value of nuclear weapons depends on willingness to use them; and if they were used, it would constitute a catastrophic war crime resulting in the deaths of innocent civilians and pose a mortal threat to human civilisation.

2.   That we should campaign for the scrapping of these weapons and, specifically against Trident renewal, and for the money saved to be spent for:-

  • social good including starting by guaranteeing well-paid, secure, socially useful jobs to utilise the skills and maintain the livelihoods of the workers involved.
  • investment in more relevant areas of national security to provide security for everyone on a realistic basis not involving mutually assured destruction.

3.   That such a policy could, if seriously campaigned for, be tremendously popular

Resolves

To promote this policy throughout the party.
