Attack on the fabric of our society

I wrote this within minutes of the announcement of the death of Jo Cox. To attack an MP, to me, is an attack on the fabric of our society, it denies debate and shuts down our right to a voice. Her voice should not have been be silenced. Too often the police are complacent about threats to our MP's. Stop hating our MP's. They work hard with long hours and say what must be said if you don't agree, say so. I know because I married one. I have been to an MP's surgery and felt the hate that some people bring to them. Been on the end of irrational abuse on the doorstep on a campaign trail. This unthinking nonsense provokes hate. The death of Jo Cox is the ultimate form of censorship. Think as I do ... or suffer the consequences. Today it was one public figure. In Paris recently one hundred and thirty ... tomorrow how many?

As Falmouth Town Councillors we are not without this low level abuse, not even at the local level and we get some idiots willing to have a 'pop'. I know that this is the case, Councillors in Falmouth have the same problem. If there is a point to be made, make it. Argue the case, and win it. Too often is the comment sections of a paper or website comments are full of invective. Strong opinion is good, but look to the comments section, the bigoted and ill-informed are there. We must fight this nonsense for Jo.
