We'll be canvassing today and hope you can join us.
It's important Labour gets more representation in Local Government. Come and help Jayne Kirkham and Louise Coley win the Smithick seats for Labour, for Cornwall Council and Falmouth Town Council respectively.
On the doorstep, people are very worried about planning decisions in Falmouth. Just recently 4 blocks of flats for students and luxury apartments have been passed by central Bristol Planning despite local council objection and refusal. We are going to work to push through the Local Plans for Cornwall and Falmouth so the Planning Inspectorate in Bristol is less able to do this. We are also going to put pressure on the university to honour the section 106 agreement to build for the new 2,500 students they requested rather than leaving it to private developers to do in a piecemeal, profit driven fashion.
People are concerned about the state of HMOs/student houses. There is currently a licence landlords should apply for when running an HMO, which needs to prove that the house is in a good state to obtain. This benefits students who should have decent accommodation given the high rents they pay. However, many landlords manage to avoid this and it only costs £345 for 5 years.
Labour’s plans for Cornwall Council is to push towards council tax on all residential properties that are short term let (ie holiday lets and then maybe students) to be paid by the house owner.
Empty homes should be charged at double council tax.
Labour nationally recognises worsening housing crisis under the Tories and pledged to change this in Labour's New Deal on Housing.
