Biggest ever demo in Falmouth against Trump's #MuslimBan, with 400-500 people turning up on the Moor incensed by Donald Trump's ban on people from Muslim countries entering the USA.
It was brilliant. Over the weekend Ben Kritikos's event on Facebook went viral. I caught it on Sunday where about 260 people said they'd attend by Monday it was nearly 500.
Young and old filled up The Moor on Monday evening with homemade banners. Chanting, "this is what democracy looks like", "immigrants welcome here". There was a reminder that democracy takes place through the ballot box as well and that all young people should register to vote to get their voices heard.
There were songs, speeches, chanting and people relaying their stories about racist persecution. Racism hurts all of us, the whole of society and not just those being persecuted.
There were reminders of fascist regimes in the last century, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, military dictatorships in Greece. Calling us to stand up and oppose the rise of today's fascists in the coming elections, Marine Le Pen's Front National in France, Geert Wilders Freedom Party in the Netherlands.
Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party, was right to call on Teresa May to cancel Trump's visit until he repeals the restrictions he placed on people from Muslim countries entering the US, which were put in place by Trump last week. This petition asking May to prevent Donald Trump from making a State Visit to the United Kingdom has attracted over 1.6 million votes and more people are signing as I write. Please sign if you haven't already.
Ben is from the US and is studying in Falmouth. He relayed a story about visiting hospital here in the UK. When his minor operation was finished, he asked where he should go to pay. He was told it was free on demand. he was astonished as people have to pay for treatment in America. If they can't afford it, they don't get it and can die from curable diseases. This is a salutary reminder of where the Tories want to take us here in Britain. Jeremy Hunt wants to slash the health and social care budget for Cornwall by £264m. Little by little the Tories want to slash, trash and privatise our healthcare. At the demonstration there was a call for people to march on Saturday 4 March and stand up for the NHS. Look out for a demo near you in Cornwall on the 4th.
