Horrifying Projections for Universal Credit

Labour Councillor, Jayne Kirkham, reports back on the Councillors’ briefing on Universal Credit (UC) held on Thursday 22 February.
Horrifying predictions being given to us:
1. 4,388 Cornish households will be more than £30 per week worse off under UC.
2. 46.5% of claimants will be worse off under UC.
3. By 2020 working age people will be £19.48 per week worse off under UC in Cornwall.
UC is being rolled out for everyone it doesn’t already affect, on 6 June in Falmouth and Penryn.
On the small plus side, the Council are prepared for the gap between Housing Benefit (HB) and UC with a fund to roll on HB for 4 weeks (plus the additional 3 weeks) to try to cover the delay to prevent people getting (further) into rent arrears.
