Junior Doctor's dispute

This CLP recognises the strength of feeling among Junior Hospital Doctors about the imposition of a contract that is neither fair to them nor safe for patients. We fully support them in the actions they have been forced to take. We believe that imposing the new contract will seriously undermine the ability of the NHS to recruit and retain junior doctors in areas of medicine with the most unusual hours.

Where there are already staffing shortages. It will not offer adequate protection to junior doctors who may be asked to work very long hours. Furthermore it now seems that the limited guarantees given to Junior Doctors have not been properly costed nor has due consideration been given to the effects of the new contract on equality. We note that the present Secretary of State’s inaccurate representation of statistical evidence; his misrepresentation of NHS chief Executives and his decision to unilaterally impose the new contract means that he has lost the confidence of the medical profession and indeed of the NHS workforce as a whole.

We note that the Government’s former adviser on patient safety, Don Berwick, has said it should apologise to junior doctors over the contract dispute. We therefore call upon David Cameron to replace Jeremy Hunt with someone capable of negotiating in a fair, honest, respectful manner paying due attention to issues of patient safety and equality. We call upon the whole Labour Party support the Junior doctors in their dispute.
