I’m writing to all Labour Party Members in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to encourage you to take part in our campaigns in 2018.
You will have had a message from our Leader, Jeremy Corbyn, explaining the opportunities and challenges we face in the coming year. I can do no better than to reiterate his call to action in order to create a society for the many, not the few.
Throughout the year, your Constituency Labour Party (CLP) or Branch (BLP) will be organising street stalls, door-to-door canvassing, social events and other activities to improve the profile of Labour in your area, raise funds and run election campaigns. Throughout the year there will be by-elections to Town and Parish Councils — indeed, there are some in progress right now — and your help will be needed, and appreciated, in these. If you’re up for helping, whether it’s by putting a poster in your window, canvassing voters or anything in between, please contact your BLP or CLP Secretary
In addition, there will be campaigns covering the whole of Cornwall and Scilly, from protecting our NHS to promoting fair housing for all. All CLPs will be co-ordinating these campaigns through the Local Campaign Forum (LCF). The call will go out for volunteers to work on these campaigns and, again, I urge you to take part. As you know, the Labour Party can best influence political decisions by having members elected. It is vital that we improve our level of representation across Cornwall and Scilly. Following the sad death of Candy Atherton last autumn, Jayne Kirkham has been selected as our Labour candidate for the by-election for the Falmouth Smithick division of Cornwall Council on 1st February. This election is really important: we need to retain the seat in order to maintain our numbers on Cornwall Council; we need to honour the memory of Candy, who did a lot for Cornwall; and we need to build on the hard work done in the General Election (Truro & Falmouth is now a Labour-Tory marginal seat) and show that Labour is making progress in Cornwall. To that end, I urge you to get involved in Jayne’s campaign — contact your CLP Secretary to offer help in whatever capacity you can. Of course, campaigns cost money so any donations should also be sent via your CLP Secretary.
All in all, I am sure that 2018 is going to be a good year for Labour in Cornwall and Scilly and therefore a good year for Cornwall and Scilly. May I wish you Bledhen Nowyth Da — Happy New Year — and let’s all work, for the many, not the few.
