Kirstie Edwards
Kirstie Edwards

Kirstie was elected in 2021 to Falmouth town council and immediately became Deputy Mayor. She also stood for Cornwall Council Trescobeas and Budock and missed the seat by 14 votes, as a new unknown labour candidate, the closest margin in the county. She had been a prominent voice in the community for a number of years, particularly on environmental issues. She led Falmouth to Plastic free status in 2018 and has been pivotal in many of the positive changes we have seen in Falmouth to protect sea and land respectively.

Since becoming Deputy Mayor, she has used her platform to really challenge what a Deputy Mayor is expected to be- you’ll see her in her chains, picking up litter, dancing through the streets waving pride flag or climbing on tanks at events, not just smiling and nodding! Along with her colleagues at Falmouth town council, the labour group have led fundamental changes to the language of the council to make it gender neutral. This will empower all women, men and non binary people that come through after their term ends to feel equally represented.

She has used her voice to focus on a range of challenging topics, as diverse as Violence against women and girls, Domestic violence, Mental health in children and adults, special educational needs access, hate crime and inclusivity, climate action, alongside disability awareness and access. She is passionate in her dedication to be a voice for those that find it a challenge to have one, having been one herself. She plans to dismantle the patriarchy and ‘the way things have always been done’ and to empower and lead a new generation of female leaders.

Kirstie thrives on project leadership and has worked on a number of large projects in Falmouth with her colleagues and is a driving force on anything she works on. Her current focus is to significantly increase provision for young people, particularly to build an inclusive skatepark for all wheeled sports at the Draceana site. Her mantra is ‘teamwork makes the dreamwork’ and she is known for her work across the political spectrum to make the lives of local people better. Tenacious and a fan of action not just words, Kirstie has a reputation for making things happen. You can follow her work at Councillor Kirstie Edwards- Deputy Mayor for Falmouth | Facebook
