The Truro & Falmouth Labour Party announce our Labour candidate for the 2017 General Election

We are delighted that Jayne Kirkham is standing as our Labour candidate.

Speaking to Labour members on Saturday at Carnon Downs Village Hall, Jayne said:

“Cornwall is a fantastic place to live, but there are real issues here. Low wages, a lack of housing people can afford to buy or rent and few council or social houses being built. There is underfunding of the NHS and social care.  There are threats to our local hospitals, not least beds at Treliske, and the very existence of Falmouth Hospital.

“We see cuts to our school budgets resulting in fewer teachers and assistants and we are suffering the loss of EU funding to stimulate our economy.

“The Tories have no answer to any of these issues.

“The Labour Party has already pledged to raise the minimum wage to £10 per hour, get rid of zero hours contracts, build affordable homes and council housing and remove the 1% pay cap for NHS workers. We will fund schools and the NHS properly, keep hospitals open and invest in Cornwall’s economy and infrastructure to help replace the EU funding we will lose.

“All these things, and more, will be in Labour’s manifesto, fully costed. Don’t let the Tories convince you that the UK is too poor to have healthcare and education fit for the 21st century. If the Tories get in without a strong opposition they will have free rein to make 5 more years of cuts and privatisations. A blank cheque to slash where they will. Cornwall will receive little of the money we were promised post Brexit.

“Labour will campaign for a Brexit which genuinely provides the best deal for the country and protects all the workers’ rights and environmental protections that the EU has given us. The Tories see these rights as red tape. They will not protect workers or the environment.

“Labour and the Lib Dems were neck and neck in Truro and Falmouth in the 2015 election. Vote for the party you believe in rather than the party that went into coalition with the Tories. Labour can and will win in Truro and Falmouth.”

Jayne lives in Falmouth with her son and works in a local school. Prior to moving to Falmouth she worked as a lawyer where her job was to advise and help people who had been injured at work or had employment law claims.

A Falmouth resident for more than 11 years, she has also used her legal skills with Falmouth Citizens’ Advice Bureau helping local people with similar issues.

Constituency Chair Candy Atherton said, “we are delighted that Jayne has been selected as our candidate. She will be an outstanding champion for our community. I urge people not to waste their vote on minority parties such as the Lib Dems or Greens.  Only Labour can beat the Tories in Westminster.  Don’t let the Lib Dems get back into bed with the Tories. I urge people to vote for Jayne and Labour at the General Election.”
